1. Install BlackYT
BlackYT is Android only and needs Android 8.0 or newer. iPhone and iPad support is planned for later, with no release date. The v0.6.0 release provides BlackYT-Android-v0.6.0.apk (versionCode 60).
- Open the v0.6.0 release page and download
BlackYT-Android-v0.6.0.apkunder Assets. Do not choose the GitHub source-code ZIP. - Open Chrome's ⋮ → Downloads or Android Files → Downloads. Tap the APK once the download completes.
- If Android asks for permission, on a Pixel go to Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps → Chrome → Allow from this source. If Files opened the APK, choose Files. These labels vary by phone; the permission is only for the app that opens the file. Return to Downloads and tap the APK again. You can revoke the permission after installation. See Google Pixel install-from-source help.
- Tap Install, then Open. Find the app named BlackYT. The older Chrome shortcut named BlackYT Phone needs Termux and is a separate legacy app.
Standard installation, including the owner's UK Pixel setup, does not need Developer options, USB debugging, root access, bootloader unlocking, or a custom certificate. USB debugging is only for developers installing or inspecting a test build. Do not disable Play Protect or ignore security warnings. If Android shows a Play Protect, unverified-developer, organization, work, or school block, stop and contact the maintainer or device administrator. Do not try to bypass it. See the Android developer verification FAQ.
While music plays, look for Android’s media controls. Their visibility depends on your notification and lock-screen settings. BlackYT needs internet access to search and stream, but does not need microphone, contacts, or photo access. No BlackYT or paid hosting account is needed. Mobile-data charges may apply through your carrier, and streaming uses battery. The app does not save songs for offline listening.
Try a short playback check
Play a song for about two minutes, lock the screen, and check that audio continues. If you added another song, you can also check whether it starts when the first finishes. An optional mobile-data check may use your data allowance.
2. Play your first song
- Bottom navigation switches between Home, Search, Library, and Queue. Home shows the small mascot, Jump back in with up to 12 recent tracks, and colorful interest tiles that start real searches.
- Recent-play history stores public track metadata and artwork references locally. Clear it using Home → More (⋮) → Clear listening history. The last eight search phrases are also stored locally with a Clear action. Version 0.6.0 adds named playlists and optional suggestions; suggestions are never added automatically.
- Search with the compact field, its Search action, or the keyboard Search/Enter action. Choose Music or All videos; open Filters for optional include-any and exclude-any terms. Music classification depends on YT metadata and is not guaranteed. Search also includes Creators.
- Load more adds further results up to 200 matches; use Load more for another page. Tap a result to play it immediately; Add appends it to the FIFO queue. The + button adds a song to your queue. In Queue, use × beside an upcoming song to remove it.
- A miniplayer appears above bottom navigation only while a track is current. Tap it for full Now Playing; Back returns. The full player has seeking, Previous, Play/Pause, Next, Queue, and More (Stop and Retry). Swipe left on its artwork or the miniplayer to select the next queued song; swipe right for the previous one. Swiping at either end keeps you in the queue. Buttons show a pressed effect, and Starting feedback confirms a selection is loading.
The queue lasts only for the current app session. Recent tracks and search phrases are saved locally. There are no offline downloads or sign-in.
Use v0.5.0 discovery, Library and Explore
Historical v0.5.0 checks (tested with versionCode 50). The phone journey passed for shared-link preview and timestamped playback, Library resume after activity recreation, Wes Roth creator search and Videos paging, saving and reopening a creator, Explore add/edit, and muted screen-off playback. See verification-v0.5.0.json for final automated results.
Open a YT link without autoplay
- In the YT app or another app, tap Share and choose BlackYT. You can also open a supported public video link with BlackYT from another app.
- BlackYT shows a preview first. It does not start playing automatically; tap the video result when you are ready.
- Supported shared links include
youtu.beshort links and start times. For example,t=205smeans 3 minutes 25 seconds. The phone check confirmed the selected result started at 205 seconds. - If BlackYT is not offered by the other app, use Search and paste the link. Link availability still depends on YT and the extractor.
Find spoken episodes and creators
- Open Search and choose All videos for talks, interviews, lectures, podcasts, music and other public videos. BlackYT does not automatically classify or label content as a podcast.
- Choose Creators to search for a channel or show name. Open a creator to browse its Videos page and use Load more to continue through available results.
- Use the bookmark on a creator page to save that creator in Your Library. Open the saved creator later to fetch its latest videos; an internet connection is needed. Use × beside it in Library to remove it.
Save episodes and return later
- Tap the bookmark beside a search result or in Now Playing to save episode information in Your Library.
- Open the Library tab and tap a saved episode to resume where you left off. Choose its options for Play from beginning, Add to queue, or Remove from Library.
- When 30 seconds or less remain, the next resume starts from the beginning instead of the very end.
- Saved episodes are links and listening progress, not downloaded audio. The Library and saved creators stay on this phone; there is no account or cloud sync. Uninstalling BlackYT or clearing its storage removes these saves and your custom Explore topics. Install updates over the existing app to keep them.
Make Explore your own
- On Home, open Edit beside Explore.
- Choose + Add a topic, enter a topic name and search phrase, choose whether to limit it to Music, then tap Save.
- Select a topic to edit it, move it up or down, or remove it. Choose Restore defaults to replace your topics with the starter set.
- Explore changes are saved locally on this phone.
Device check details: the shared t=205s link previewed without autoplay, and playback started at 205 seconds. The Library retained the saved position after its Activity was recreated. A Wes Roth creator search reached and paged Videos, saved the creator, then reopened its latest videos from Library. An added and edited Explore topic persisted and launched an All videos search. Media3 continued for 35 seconds with the activity finished and the screen locked/display off; BlackYT was muted during this check. This does not establish audible acceptance or support for every device.
Final release checks: 20 release unit tests and 14 phone instrumentation tests passed. Release lint reported zero errors and 19 warnings. A complete 208.564-second song finished naturally and advanced to the next queued track on mobile data. The complete two-minute sample stayed locked with the display asleep; both conditions still held at the next track. USB stayed connected, and BlackYT was muted. Saved progress, a creator and a custom Explore topic also survived a new app process. The installed APK matched the signed release byte for byte. These technical checks do not establish audible acceptance or support for other phones. Technical verification details.
Explore the new app
Music and spoken videos share the same player and queue. Use bookmarks for your Library and + for the current queue.
v0.5.0 app-owned view renders from the Pixel’s installed release, using public example content and isolated test data. No system, lock-screen, personal Library or other-app content is shown. Some views were laid out inside the app while the display slept; these are interface renders, not full-device screenshots. YT thumbnails belong to their respective rights holders.
Video audio language: If a video played in the wrong language, update to v0.5.1 and select it again. BlackYT prefers the creator’s original audio when YT identifies it, in any language. If that information is unavailable, an alternate track may be used. There is no manual audio-track selector.
3. Install future updates
- Finish listening first: an update stops the running app, and the queue is not saved permanently.
- Download
BlackYT-Android-v0.6.0.apkfrom the official BlackYT release page. - Open it and choose Update or Install over the existing BlackYT. Do not uninstall first if you want to retain app data.
- If Android reports a signature conflict, stop and ask the maintainer. Releases need the same signing key to update in place.
Your current app does not update itself automatically. Never download a replacement from an unrelated website. The current native APK is v0.5.0 (versionCode 50); use the release link at the top of this guide.
FAQ
Can I stream podcasts or choose another style?
The Home tiles are shortcuts. Type any genre, artist or interest into Search. Spoken videos, interviews, news and lectures can be listened to like podcasts. For one hosted on YT, choose All videos and search for the show or paste its episode link. You can queue available episodes and listen with the screen off. Supported shared YT links preserve their timestamps (for example, t=205s is 3:25) and open a preview without autoplay. The phone check confirmed playback starts at the shared time after you tap the result. Spoken-video discovery uses All videos and Creators search; there is no podcast directory, RSS reader, or subscription feature.
Do I need Developer options, USB debugging, or a computer?
No for a normal installation. A phone and internet connection are enough. Those developer settings are only used when a developer installs or inspects a test build.
Why does Android ask to allow installs from Chrome?
Android asks you to allow the app that opened the APK to install it. On a Pixel, use Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps → Chrome → Allow from this source. Choose Files instead if Files opened the APK. You can turn the permission off afterwards; labels vary on other phones.
What is the difference between Play and Add?
Play starts a result immediately. Add appends it to the FIFO queue; it does not start playback. Queue items can be removed. Tap a result to start it, then use the miniplayer to open full Now Playing. Version 0.6.0 adds named local playlists and optional suggestions that are never added automatically.
Does the queue survive when I close BlackYT?
No. The queue belongs to the current app session and can clear when the app closes or is force-stopped. Up to 12 recently played tracks and eight search phrases are stored locally, and search history has Clear; listening history uses Home → More (⋮) → Clear listening history.
Does BlackYT download songs or need a YT sign-in?
No. It streams while online and does not provide offline downloads. There is no BlackYT sign-in or hosting account. Your phone carrier may charge for mobile data.
Can I use this on an iPhone or iPad?
Not yet. The current app is Android only. An iOS version is planned, but there is no release date.
Can I install the update over an existing BlackYT?
Yes, install the newer release over the existing app. Updates must use the same signing key. If Android reports a signature conflict, do not uninstall; contact the maintainer first.
What was checked in v0.4.2?
Historical v0.4.2 checks covered Pixel search, links, filters, pagination, artwork, navigation, queue, swipe controls, and screen-off playback. They do not describe the current release.
What has been checked on a phone in v0.5.0?
The shared Wes Roth youtu.be link previewed without autoplay and started at 205 seconds after selection. Its saved resume point survived Library Activity recreation. Wes Roth creator search opened and paged Videos, saved the creator, then fetched its latest videos from Library. Explore add/edit persisted and opened an All videos search. Media3 continued for 35 seconds with the activity finished and the screen locked/display off; BlackYT was muted during the check. Twenty debug unit tests passed. See verification-v0.5.0.json for final automated results. This does not establish audible acceptance or support for every phone.
What if Android shows a security block?
Stop and contact the app maintainer or your device administrator. Do not turn off Play Protect or try to bypass the block. Read the Android developer verification FAQ for official information.
Troubleshooting
I cannot find the APK.
Open the release link above, look under Assets, and choose BlackYT-Android-v0.6.0.apk under Assets.
“App not installed” or “Problem parsing the package”.
Check that the phone runs Android 8.0 or newer and that the whole APK finished downloading. Download the exact APK again. If the message continues, stop and contact the maintainer with the phone model and exact error.
Play Protect, unverified-developer, work, or school warning.
Stop. Do not disable protections or bypass the warning. Ask the maintainer or device administrator for help.
Search shows no results or misses a song.
Check your connection, try a shorter phrase, choose All videos, or clear/broaden terms in Filters. Include-any keeps a result if any term appears; exclude-any removes it if any term appears, and takes priority.
A song starts but there is no sound.
Check media volume, mute, Bluetooth, headphones, and whether Android routed audio to another device. Try Play/Pause and a different result.
HTTP 403 or playback stops after changing networks.
Check that the phone is online and tap Retry current song for a fresh stream link. Try another result if that song remains unavailable. Some items are restricted, and YT can change its service.
Does a 403 mean a geographic block?
A 403 is an HTTP refusal; it does not identify its cause. During the Pixel checks, an earlier refusal was followed by successful fresh audio requests and Android playback of the same video. A geographic block was not established. BlackYT automatically asks for one fresh stream address after a 403. If it still fails, try Retry current song or another available upload. Comparing the same video in the official YT app on the same phone and network can help identify a content restriction. Respect any country or rights restriction shown there. See YT region-availability help and Android’s HTTP playback error reference.
Playback stops when I lock the screen.
Reopen BlackYT and resume. If it keeps happening, check BlackYT only under Settings → Apps → BlackYT → App battery usage. On Pixel this may be labelled Allow background usage. Keep the general battery setting at its recommended value; do not disable optimization globally. Android's battery guidance explains app-specific background settings.
The queue is empty or the next song does not start.
Add appends to the FIFO queue but does not start playback. Tap a result to start it, then add more. Next advances to the next queued item.
My queue vanished.
The queue is session-only. Force-stopping the app, restarting the phone, or Android ending its process can clear it. Recent-play history and recent searches are stored locally and can be cleared.
Android says the update cannot be installed.
Do not uninstall the working copy if Android reports a signing conflict. Updates require the same signing key. Contact the maintainer with the exact message.
I see both BlackYT and BlackYT Phone.
BlackYT is the native app. BlackYT Phone is the old Chrome shortcut that relies on Termux; the native app does not need it.
Still need help?
Open a BlackYT support issue. Tell us your phone model, Android version, the exact message and the step you reached. A GitHub account is needed to post an issue, but not to download the app.
Do not post passwords, signing keys, account tokens, private messages or complete stream links. Cover personal details in screenshots. Search your phone’s Settings for “Android version” if you need to find it.

Device test history and technical notes
Historical v0.3.0 evidence: its signed APK and hash were checked on the Pixel 10 Pro XL; the owner confirmed audible playback, locked-screen playback, queue continuation, and playback on mobile data with USB unplugged. This evidence applies to v0.3.0 only and does not establish v0.4.2 results. v0.4.2 automated checks passed on the Pixel 10 Pro XL: nine release unit tests, release lint with zero errors and 17 warnings, live search/link/filter/paging/artwork checks, and native navigation, queue, tap-feedback and swipe checks. A silent song played for its complete 208.564-second duration and advanced naturally to the next queued item on mobile data. The complete two-minute sample stayed locked with the display off; both conditions were still true at the next song. USB remained connected. The installed APK hash matched the tested build. Owner audible and visual acceptance of v0.4.2 remains pending. Other phones are unverified. These checks do not establish support for every Android device.
Audio streams directly over HTTPS from YT to the phone through its Googlevideo host; the Mac and Termux are not playback dependencies. Android's Media3 background playback guidance describes the app's playback approach.
Mascot artwork and prompt
Original artwork created for BlackYT using the built-in image-generation tool. The open wings and flowing notes represent the enjoyment of music without barriers.
Prompt: Original friendly joyous black songbird mascot for BlackYT, understated headphones, wings open as if dancing, a few colorful musical notes flowing freely. Polished expressive illustration, warm welcoming inclusive expression, rich deep green and lime brand accents, full figure centered with clean thumbnail-readable silhouette and comfortable margins. Genuine transparent background. No locks, walls, broken barriers, text, logos, watermark, or imitation of known mascots.
v0.6.0 features
In Search, tap Select, tap results or Select all, then Create playlist or Add selected. Add selected lets you choose an existing playlist or create one. Each result also has a playlist button. Named playlists are stored locally in Library. Play playlist explicitly replaces the queue; Add all appends items and preserves current playback. Optional Find more like these suggestions use up to two creator pages and two searches, capped at 12. “New to this playlist” does not verify upload dates, and suggestions are never added automatically.
Playback preparation targets the next two queued items and first visible item, with at most 384 KiB per item when stable format identity exists and a 32 MiB on-device LRU cache. Choose Off, Unmetered connections (default), or Wi-Fi and mobile data; the rate limit is eight items per minute. Off cancels work and asynchronously clears the cache. Unknown identity or cache failure falls back to direct playback. Audio still streams directly from YT to the device; this is not an offline download library and instant starts or Spotify parity are not promised. Very short clips may fit entirely within the byte cap. Filters and original-track handling remain; a source-format change may require Retry current song.
The signed versionCode 60 APK was installed and checked on a USB-connected Pixel with app data preserved. The owner confirmed audible playback. The check covered fresh U2 search, playlist creation from two results, optional suggestions, queue addition and append behaviour, and full-player next/previous swipes. Four instrumentation checks passed: two playlist-store tests, a read-only prefix-cache evidence check (one 393,216-byte file), and natural-end playback (247.873 seconds) with automatic next-track while locked with the screen off over Wi-Fi. All 41 JVM unit tests pass; release lint has zero errors and 19 warnings. No mobile-data result is claimed. See the versioned verification evidence.
BlackYT has no in-app advertising or app analytics SDKs in the inspected build. YT/Google receives direct search and streaming requests and your IP address; creator sponsorships can remain. Read the privacy and preparation details.
